Unity Trust Bank Hits £2bn Deposits as Social Lending Rises 7%

<h4>Unity Trust Bank has passed the £2 billion mark in customer deposits for the first time, according to its half-year results for the six months ending June 2026. The Birmingham-based ethical lender recorded a customer base of nearly 12,000, a record high, while new lending of £155.7 million represented a seven per cent increase on the same period in 2025.</h4>Profit before tax came in at £22.8 million, down from £28.6 million a year earlier. The bank attributed the reduction to deliberate investment in infrastructure and customer service rather than deteriorating credit quality. The bank said 64 per cent of loans were distributed to borrowers in disadvantaged communities.The sectoral breakdown illustrates the bank’s focus on public-service adjacent organisations. Unity says its lending in the period supported 4,784 homes, 646 care beds, 235 day care spaces, 3,263 jobs and over 2.5 million prescriptions. A further £13.8 million was channelled through seven Community Development Finance Institutions, supporting more than 150 small businesses.On the green side, Unity said it has exceeded its cumulative green lending target by nearly 200 per cent, through a mix of high-energy-efficiency property finance, Green Tariff loans and local authority climate work. A further £1.4 million was directed to Local Climate Bonds in the first half of 2026, taking the bank’s total support to six local authorities through that instrument. Unity also provided £102 million to nine local authorities through Money Market loans.Chief executive Colin Fyfe said: “Surpassing £2bn in deposits is an important milestone for us. It enables us to keep supporting our socially-minded customers to deliver positive impact.”<h5>Market context</h5>Unity Trust Bank occupies a distinctive but increasingly contested corner of the UK business banking market. Established in 1984 and majority-owned by trade unions, it competes less with high-street banks than with a growing cohort of ethical and mission-aligned lenders, including Triodos Bank UK, Charity Bank and the Co-operative Bank, all of which target the voluntary sector, housing associations and social enterprises. The segment is also attracting interest from specialist community development finance institutions and, at the margins, from ESG-labelled products offered by mainstream banks seeking credit for sustainable finance commitments.The drop in profit before tax is worth monitoring. Unity’s stated explanation, investment spend, is plausible given the customer satisfaction improvements and Institute of Customer Service accreditation noted in the results, but a move from £28.6 million to £22.8 million in a single half-year warrants scrutiny as interest rate tailwinds from the Bank of England‘s earlier hiking cycle continue to fade. For a bank whose regulatory capital position depends on retained earnings rather than equity market access, the trajectory of profitability matters alongside the social impact metrics.The retention of the Fitch investment-grade rating provides some comfort to depositors, particularly the public-sector bodies and charities that make up a significant portion of Unity’s customer base and that face their own treasury governance requirements around counterparty credit quality.
